Thought...... Shy....fearful...excited...apprehensive. From kindergarten to college "back to school" is filled with emotion. Whether moving to the next grade or to the next school, children need parent support on that crucial day. What if you were required to change jobs every year? Just when you began to feel capable in your work, you would get a new boss, a new office, new co-workers, new responsibilities. That's what it feels like to go back to school. Acknowledge the jumble of emotions your child may be experiencing and reassure them that today's unknown are tomorrow's routines. Accompany your child to school and meet the teacher together. Your presence says to your child and his teacher "I am on the team, too." Slip a note in your child's lunch or backpack to give him/her a mid-day smile and let him know that you are thinking about them. As your youngsters head out the door, they face stresses beyond the usual education and social issues -- threats of violence, bullies, drugs, competition. Be willing to initiate conversation with your child and provide a safe, loving place for them to come home to. Be available after school that first day of school. My youngest is headed to Jr. High this year. He is a bit on the small side. On 6th grade registration day he was excited and appeared to have no fears. The next day we went to put his supplies in his locker and it was registration for 7th and 8th grade. That confidence Luke had the day before seemed to evaporate into thin air as he looked at the size of those 8th graders. While normally a confident child I could see apprehension come into his eyes. I don't suppose having his older brother (a Junior) whispering stories of being stuffed into lockers and garbage cans, helped Luke's emotional state. To calm looks apprehension we did a dry run of his schedule, mapping out when to go to his locker, what books to grab and identified how little contact he would actually have with the upper class men. We also talked about how likable Luke was, how many 7th and 8th graders he knew that would help him get acclimated. I assured him on the first day of school I would be walking him into the school to get him situated and off to his first class, as well as, having him ride to school with a friend to help boost his confidence. There will be a note in his lunch telling him how much I love him and assure him I will be waiting for him when he gets home to hear how his day was. I will also be praying for him throughout the day. Luke seems to have his excitement and confidence back about beginning this new journey in his life My oldest will be a Junior this year. While Ryan lacks no confidence and does not appear to have any fears about school, it is important that he too begins his first day of school knowing he is loved and supported. He too will have a note to open up and be embarrassed about. But while he may appear embarrassed, he will be confident of my love and support. Ryan has voiced that many of the kids at school who make bad choices do not have parents that are engaged in their lives. They give them money and things, but no time. Ryan will be confident that we as parents are there for him and will also be waiting for him when he returns from school on that first day. Be engaged in your children's lives. Don't believe the society norm that kids can do it on their own. I just heard on the news recently that most crime happens between 3 p.m - 6 p.m. That is when kids are left to their own devices. That is why the pregnancy and crime rate in Jr. High is at an all time high. Don't take the easy way out.....engage, love, support and be there through the hard and good times. Have a blessed school year! Recommended

Fresh Figs with Ricotta, Honey, and Pistachios You can't blame people for not wanting to become schoolteachers. They can make more money for the same work in professional wrestling. My kids can hardly wait for school to start again. Misbehaving just isn't as much fun when you don't have a big audience. Show me a high school student who doesn't use a deodorant and I'll show you a kid in a class by himself. We hear a lot about the high cost of sending a child to college. Has anybody tried to get a kid past the third grade lately? When I was in school I was the teacher's pet. She kept me on a leash and let me sleep at the foot of her desk. The kids going back to school this year are facing a crucial decision: should they dress like 50 Cent or Hannah Montana? I can tell it's back-to-school time again. This morning I caught my son in front of the mirror practicing his stomach ache faces. |
